3 things you must do now to land a job in 2014

3 things you must do now to land a job in 2014 3 things you must do now to land a job in 2014 Jump-start your New Year’s career resolution with these three steps. The New Year is traditionally a time to reflect on last year’s accomplishments and personal growth. But more importantly, it is a great time to make plans and goals to enhance your life in the future. If your goal includes moving up in your career, here are three of the first steps you need to take to get noticed by potential employers and help you get a fresh professional start in 2014.1. Revamp your resume. Now is a great time to review your resume and highlight key accomplishments from the previous year. Take a close look at job descriptions for your “dream job” and figure out what employers are looking for in an ideal candidate. Note the qualifications you meet and include them in your resume. Articulate everything that makes you a top candidate for your desired position. Also work on your resume format. Many times, the first thing an employer is negatively drawn to is something different or quirky in your resume layout. Make sure your resume is organized and consistent so your information shines through â€" not the formatting.2. Take advantage of social media. If you haven’t yet, now is the time to gain an online presence. As a recruiter, I am constantly checking various social media channels for my next hires. You want to paint a positive picture of who you are and who you wish employers to see you as. Take some time in the New Year to research social media channels and choose which are right for you.Build a LinkedIn profile, or revamp the one you already have. Adjusting a piece of information in your profile immediately alerts your followers to the change and brings you back into the public eye. Add to your connections list. Research your friends in the areas you wish to work in and request to follow them and their peers. The more exposure you get, the more likely an employer is to contact you or an employee to refer you.3. Join networking groups.Networking is one of the best ways to get yourself out there and meet new people. There are many different networking groups you can join that are specific to your career, or the one you wish to be in. One option to try is Meetup; a fairly new company that organizes events based on shared interests. They have groups that span nearly every industry. Through networking, you can learn the pros and cons of a job or industry. Making connections can be nerve-racking, so feel free to bring a more social friend to network with you!Follow these three guidelines to set yourself up for success in the New Year and watch your resolution become reality.
