Minimum Legal Age to Work in Florida

Minimum Legal Age to Work in FloridaMinimum Legal Age to Work in FloridaAlthough there aresome exceptions, almost everywhere across the United States, young people can begin working at age 14 because thats what federal child labor laws state. However, child labor laws in each state may also indicate the extremum age to work and which permits they need to do so. When there is a conflict between federal and state laws, the more restrictive law will apply. Working Guidelines for Teens in the Sunshine State In Florida, teens do leid need a child employment certificate towork, but they do need to show proof of age. There,14- and 15-year-olds can work up to 15 hours per week, but not before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. and not more than three hours on school days when a school day follows. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays or non-school days, these teens may work up to eight hours. They may also not work in construction unless its in a clerical capacity. Meanwhile, youth in the 16- to 17-year-old age bracket cannot perform dangerous tasks on the job such as logging, firefighting or wrecking or demolition. Theyre also not allowed to work near hazardous substances such as pesticides or radioactive substances. They cant work with electrical apparatuses or wiring either. Sutdy says hand gestures will help make your pitch more convincing

Sutdy says hand gestures will help make your pitch mora convincingSutdy says hand gestures will help make your pitch more convincingPitching is an inherently difficult thing to do. Much of the consternation revolves around word economy, but if research presented by Joep Cornelissen of Erasmus University is to be believed, gestures actually hold more weight than speaking does, when pitching ideas.Painting a pictureThe findings, which premiered in the May edition of the Harvard Business Review, had Cornelissen and his team of researchers put together four fictional pitches. One of the pitches featured a heavy amount of figurative language, one of the presentations included a lot of hand gestures, one used both figurative language and hand gestures and the last pitch used neither. When the entrepreneur- an actor wed hired- used his hands to explain the idea, investors were more interested in it than when he described it in straightforward technical terms or with metaphors, analogies, an d anecdotes, Cornelissen explained.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreOn average, the deployment of hand gestures accounted for a 12% increase in the likelihood of subjects being interesting in the staged investments. A perfect pitch is one that depicts an idea as clearly and concisely as possible. In Cornelissens measured opinion, the use of hand gestures ensures foreign concepts come across more concretely. Investors could better appraise the products potential because they had a pretty good understanding of how it might look and work.More than the practical reasoning, gestures also make speakers seem more charismatic and passionate. Body language is a great way to suggest confidence, without running the risk of coming across as delusionalor overbearing. On the one handThere has to be some kind of method at play. The wrong kind of hand gestures can have an adverse effect. Too much gesturing could be off-putting, making the pitch more of a pantomime, Cornelissen told Harvard Business Review, Its not about the amount, however. As long as the gestures align with whats being said, they can only do your pitch good. Conversely, hand gestures that are both too frequent and irrelevant will serve as a distraction. Be sure to accompany key moments in the discourse with purposeful gesticulations. If you can be strategic and find one or two killer gestures that really fruchtfleisch your ideas or where you are with a venture- or that clarify what the product or service is about- that could do wonders. Cornelissen explained.Cornelissen research was tagged with another factor that impacts the perception of a pitch. Male investors were much more likely to secure funding than women. Some of winning people over with your ideas have to do with appealing to theirgut feelings and we dont have much power as far as convincing subjects against superficial instincts are concerned, un fortunately. This super simple trick could be the key to weight loss

This super simple trick could be the key to weight lossThis super simple trick could be the key to weight lossMost of the pillory lobbed at dietary self-tracking is roused by how time-consuming it is. Successfully adhering to a diet in the midst of our frenetic work schedules is hard enough without amputating hours to log exactly how weak-willed we are.Time constraints aside, a reasoned mind would have to agree that the idea of forcing yourself to be accountable by keeping a journal of your bad habits, is a pretty good one.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBut what if it could still be effective without taking up such a significant portion of our day?Just 15 minutesJean Harvey is a professor in the department of nutrition and food services at The University of Vermont In Burlington, that recently penned a study that rejects the notion of a fundamentally time draining diet diary. S he says with a little practice, it can take as little as 15 minutes a day.The study focused on individuals enrolled in low-calories diet regiments, required to exercise at least 200 minutes a week. Over the course of six months, each subject was required to log what they ate every day through a web-based program. While Harvey did note that the longer participants spent tracking what they ate, the more successful they were, twice a day (15 minutes max) still proved to be much more effective than putting your food indulgences on the pay-no-mind list. The most successful of the group, who initially spent a little over 23 minutes a day taking note of what they ate, lost 10% of their body fat and widdled their journaling down to a brisk 15 minutes by the time the study was concluded. In defense of dietary trackingKeeping track of what and how you eat is a great way to ensure you adhere to whatever diet youve deemed fit. Even if youre not adhering to a strict diet and just trying to maintain a sense of balance, youll need a way to make efficient modifications. This can be done by identifying patterns, accommodating for larger meals by being reminded to have fewer calories later or earlier. Most importantly, it enacts the wonderful tool of self-loathing.Youll be much less likely to eat a 195 calorie donut if at some point youll have to write its 11 pm, and I just ate a 195 calorie donut.Research shows that food diaries are excellent tools for people trying to lose weight. It can also be used to make sure you are eating a healthy diet and getting all of the nutrients your body needs. Different social media networks, different game rules for 2015

Different social media networks, different game rules for 2015Different social media networks, different game rules for 2015Has social media gameplay changed? Follow these rules to set yourself up for success in the spring season of 2015 and beyond. As baseball season returns this month, with all of its rules and wonderful traditions, it has me thinking about social media networks game rules too.Just as various sports have their own regulations and gameplay customs which can be updated (think instant replay and similar), the different social media networks that are part of our world in 2015 all have their own cultures where certain things are expected and welcomedeven celebratedand other things are unwelcome or seen as odd. With baseball in mind, here are three thoughts on how social media gameplay has changed and what you need to know to set yourself up for success this spring season of 2015 and beyond.Ready? Lets play ballSocial media presence that looks identical across all networks is not a winning strategyJust as you wouldnt wear a tuxedo to a baseball game, you wouldnt want to utilize social in the same way on a social network that youre using exclusively for business networking and job search in the same casual way youd send a friend a snap on Snapchat, or post family party photos on Facebook. Think about the culture on each social network before you post and let that guide your choices.Successful social media strategies require both hitting and fieldingEven if your industry regulations or situation does not allow for realtime social media back and forth, social listening and response should leise be part of your social strategy. You shouldnt be at bat all the time, with only one-way messaging. You can field by doing social media listening and let that shape your response types, and/or guide your next social posts if you notice theres particular interest or curiosity about something.Good sportsmanship still mattersIf you have a lively social media exchange online, stick to the issues or topics and dont make personal attacks. Its OK to disagree online, but do it in such a way that you wouldnt mind everyone reading about it- because they can and do Just like sports videos, statistics, and game outcomes, the Internet is forever, and your gameplay can be revisited and reviewed and analyzed but never really replayed.

Interview Questions for a Personal Fitness Trainer

Interview Questions for a Personal Fitness TrainerInterview Questions for a Personal Fitness TrainerAlthough you should be confident in your abilities and qualifications as a fitness trainer, all interviews require practice beforehand. It isnt enough to come to the table with one exercise regimen and a few buzzwords about supplements. Nows the time to give some serious thought to the interview questions you might be asked and how you would answer them, and the specific ways that you as a fitness trainer will handle them, as you are in many ways directly responsible for another persons physical health. Research the employers standing in the fitness community, talk to professionals who have first-hand knowledge about the company, and then run through at least three to four practice runs for your upcoming interview. You should practice both in front of a mirror and, if possible, in front of a friend who has agreed to play the role of your interviewer. It is important to dress appropriate ly, which can be said for any interview, but is especially to a fitness trainer, as you need to appear in a way that is both professional and highlights your commitment to fitness. The goal is to be able to interview in a confident manner that demonstrates your level of comfort and suitability for the role. Use this list of commonly asked fitness trainer interview questions as you prepare for showcasing your skills and qualifications. Warmup Questions An interview will usually begin with basic questions, related to maybe your background in competitive sports or education in nutrition. Your answers should be practiced beforehand, but not sound rehearsed during the actual interview. How you answer is almost as important as what you have to say. Hitting both marks get you past the easy questions Why did you decide to become afitness trainer? Are you CPR-certified? What other certifications do you hold? How do you keep your fitness training knowledge up to date?Do you have fitness goa ls for yourself? If so, what are they? What group classes have you taught? In your group classes, can you explain how you accommodate varying skill and fitness levels? What diet and nutrition education have you received? What is your schedule for classes, and can you walk me through a class from start to finish? How important is nutrition to you in creating a clients regimen? Technical Questions After you cruise past the anfangsbuchstabe line of questioning and everyone is more comfortable, the interviewer will hit you with harder, more technical inquiries. These are usually open-ended, and it is a good idea to practice your answers so that you dont ramble. Using personal anecdotes about your fitness history will add depth to your answers. Youve heard that clear and concise answers are valuable. That advice holds especially true to questions such as these What evaluations do you conduct with a new client eager to begin a fitness regimen?Do you recommend dietary supplements to enhan ce your clients performance? Which ones? Can you describe your time management approach for assisting individual clients versus group workout classes?Imagine a client is discouraged during a training session. How do you keep that person motivated? If a client complains about a previous injury, how do you handle that when constructing a fitness regimen? What do you do to prevent further injury or to discourage the client from engaging in activities- during the client session or working out without you- that would exacerbate a pre-existing condition? Can you tell me three essential exercises you suggest for all clients, and why? What techniques do you use to increase your clientele? What are your goals for increasing the number of clients you serve? Customer Service Interview Questions Since you are working in what is primarily a customer service role, the interviewer will want to know the specifics regarding how you interact with clients. Do your best to answer well, while also bein g yourself. A solid personality never hurts, and often helps, when a question leaves you with the opportunity to show how you would handle the situation What experience do you have with customer service? Can you describe how youhandle customer service situationsinvolving difficult fitness center members or prospective members? What are your thoughts about organic food and a vegan diet? When you encounter a client or prospective fitness club member who is committed to a diet that differs from your own, how do you remain objective? How would you handle a client who is unhappy with your work, or a client who doesnt achieve goals when you know the dicke bretter bohren mssen is with the clients level of motivation? Tell me about a time when a client was unhappy with your work. How did you handle the situation?Walk me through an overview of a training program you would set up for a client looking strictly for weight loss and toning. What do you tell clients who are looking for instant resul ts?How would you structure a training program for a senior citizen with a pre-existing condition like diabetes? General Inquiries In addition to job-specific interview questions, you may also be asked general interview questions about your employment history, education, hard and soft skills, strengths, weaknesses, or areas for improvement. You will often be asked how you can improve, which is just another chance to highlight what sets you apart.

A great concept for anyone looking to find more meaning and contentment, either with their current job or by finding a new one (or a whole new career)The webinar featured executive coach and nationally certified master career counselor Richard Leider, and it focused on helping professionals identify their gifts and talents, put their workdays to good use, and find work that makes them laugh at the idea of retiring.During the webinar, I was struck by the following tips and thought they might be helpful for our job seekers. Leider says that during his many years as a career counselor, hes come across three universal truths which shape our careers and, therefore, our lives.Want More Purpose at Work? Reimagi ne Your CareerLeiders Three Truths about ur CareersMost people dont choose their work, it chooses them. Early in our lives, someone suggests a career field to us, or we choose a job based on the salary, or we take a part-time job and stick around for 20+ years. To find work satisfaction, people need to take an active part in choosing their work. Second acts allow people to choose for the first time, or choose again if their first choice no longer works.People are more sure of what they dont like to do than what they do like to do. People can readily name dislikes about their jobs or careers. Naming what we like is more difficult. We need to stop and deconstruct our career choices and what weve learned from them. Otherwise, we get inner-kill, which essentially means were dying from the inside-out based on our lack of work choice. When we stop growing at work, we start dying at work.Re-imagining your work is a vital life skill. If youre elend reimagining or reinventing yourself on a r egular basis, youre stuck. It doesnt matter how good you are or what level youve reached, you should always be proactive and manage your career transitions and reinventions. If youre in a place where you want to reevaluate your career choice, find more purpose at work, and see if theres something different out there for you, Leider offered some excellent tips to get started.1. First, know that you always have a choice. We may not always feel like we have choices, but we always do. Theres no such thing as the ideal job, but there are a variety of options that will make us happy and give us purpose.2. To find meaningful work, you must define your purpose. Learn your gifts (strengths), passions (interests), and values to find your true calling. To find your passions, strengths, and values, take Work Reimagineds Calling Cards exercise, a really well-designed, interactive way to identify your true career callings. Job Search Tips for Researching a Company Find Your Dream Job

Job Search Tips for Researching a Company â€" Find Your Dream Job Job Search Tips for Researching a Company - Find Your Dream Job Now that you have the perfect interview outfit, you need to start preparing for the actual interview. You want to know as much as possible about the company for each interview. Interviewers tend to ask questions like “What do you know about us?” and “Why do you want to work for our company?” Knowing about the company â€" its mission, its company culture, its strengths â€" will help you answer these questions and demonstrate your interest in the company. Tips for Researching a Company Know the Mission:  A great place to get information about a company is on the company website. Most companies have a “Mission” page or an “About Us” page that describes the company and lays out its general goals. You can also check the company’s LinkedIn page for additional details. Knowing this information will help you answer interview questions about the company.Know the Culture:  Most company sites also have information about the company culture. Find out what the office environment is like. Is there an emphasis on teamwork? Is the office more conservative or casual? This information will not only help you answer interview questions, but it will also help you decide whether you will fit in with the company. Know its Strengths:  You should get a feel for what the company is currently doing well, and where it stands in relation to similar companies. A lot of the most current information should be on the company website, as well as the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Look at external sites like Google or Google News. Sites like Vault Reports provide insider information about companies, such as rankings, ratings, and reviews. The more you can learn about the company, the more comfortable you will be talking to your interviewer. Use Any Connections:  If you know anyone who works or has worked at the company, get in touch with them. Asking an insider for his or her perspective might give you the information you would not find elsewhere.Make a List:  Once you have researched the company, create a list of relevant information (statistics, notes on the company culture, etc.) that you can easily remember and mention during the interview. Doing your research is one of the best ways to demonstrate your professionalism in an interview.

How to Motivate Your Lazy Co-workers - The Muse

How to Motivate Your Lazy Co-workers - The Muse How to Motivate Your Lazy Co-workers I remember how excited I was for my first job. I was 16 and a sales associate at American Eagle Outfitters- I couldn’t wait to learn about denim colors and how to use the fancy-looking cash register. Several weeks in, I found myself more and more frustrated with my team. I grew up being told that, “Even if you have nothing to do, there’s always something you can do.” So, I kept busy helping customers, folding shirts, organizing the back counter, and restocking dwindling piles of jeans. Apparently no one else got the memo, because while I bustled around fixing things here and there, my co-workers leaned against the counter and chatted, openly tried on the new clothes in stock, or went on long coffee breaks. To put it lightly, it annoyed me. It’s never a good feeling when you’re putting in your all at a job and the people around you are barely showing up. While I spent (too much) time being angry with my colleagues, I’ve learned a lot since. Mainly, that it’s more productive to get your co-workers on the same page than to complain about them. But, how do you do that when you’re not the boss? Try these tactics to motivate your co-workers to stay active and engaged. 1. Recognize What Motivates Them In a great talk on motivation, author and New York Times bestseller Gretchen Rubin speaks about four types of people and how they respond to rules. “The Upholder” is someone who follows both outer (imposed on you) and inner (personal goals) rules and is motivated by fulfillment. This person wakes up thinking, “What is on the schedule or to-do list today?” “The Questioner” is someone who will follow the rules if they make sense, and are thus motivated by sound reasoning. This person wakes up thinking, “What needs to get done today?” “The Rebel” is someone who resists all rules, and is instead motivated by present desires. This person wakes up thinking, “What do I want to do today?” “The Obliger” is someone who follows external rules but struggles with his or her own internal rules, and therefore is motivated by external accountability. This person wakes up thinking, “What’s expected of me today?” Even before you approach your co-worker, be aware of what kind of person he or she is. Is she inspired by “achieving” something, or more concerned about letting someone down? Does he question everything or hate to follow the rules? These qualities really do affect how you can begin to communicate. So, if your co-worker tends to not respond to an authoritative approach (a “Rebel”), it might be smarter to present a challenge rather than a command: “Jill isn’t sure we can get the presentation done by this afternoon. What do you think?” Or, if she’s a “Questioner,” maybe she needs a reason for why she should contribute: “Hey, any chance you could write that recap email to the sales team? I’m worried it’s coming off too harsh and you’re better at expressing these things than I am.” Really, it might be as simple as how you phrase a request that makes all the difference in whether or not a person actually listens. 2. Ask for Help- or Ask to Help If you’re not the boss, then you probably don’t want to blatantly tell a colleague to get to work. It probably won’t be effective, and it probably won’t earn you too many friends in the office. So, instead, you should bring him in rather than call him out. What does that mean? Just as I could’ve easily asked one of my co-workers to help me restock the shelves at AE, you can ask your colleagues to split a project with you, give you advice on a press release you’re writing, or organize some files alongside you. On the other hand, when someone doesn’t seem to be doing anything at all, it’s often times productive to offer to help him. There’s always a chance the reason he’s slacking is really because he’s stuck on an idea, or maybe confused about an assignment, or overwhelmed to the point of giving up. Simply saying, “Hey, I noticed you’ve been staring at your computer all day- I’m free for a bit, anything I can help you out with?” could be all he needs to get back on track or to open up. Or, best-case scenario, he might just say back, “No, sorry, just got distracted. Thanks!” and refocus on his own. 3. Be Direct as to How This Affects You But, when this becomes a common occurrence and starts to take away from your work, you have the right to politely bring it up to her that her lack of effort is affecting your own progress. (Note: Make sure you’re speaking on your own behalf, and not your manager’s or company’s.) I’m a big fan of “I” statements, such as “I’m really swamped with this assignment Ted gave us this week, do you know when you’ll have time to start on it?” or “I’m worried we won’t get this proposal out in time if we both don’t work on it today.” This underutilized communication strategy always makes your comments feel less confrontational and more “I need you, how can we fix this together?” Assuming your co-worker isn’t purposefuly being lazy as a way to make you look bad, this direct approach often does the trick. Even if he no longer cares about the work, odds are high he doesn’t want anyone (including you!) to be upset with him. You’re not the work police, but you’re also not responsible for doing other people’s jobs for them. So, speak up when necessary. Just make sure you’re speaking up in a way that’ll get people to listen.

Gift Ideas for the Advertising Enthusiast

Gift Ideas for the Advertising Enthusiast Gift Ideas for the Advertising Enthusiast So, you know someone in advertising or someone who loves advertising with a passion? When the times comes to get them a gift, be it for a birthday, a celebration, or a holiday, it can be tricky to find the perfect present. And if youre not savvy with the advertising world at all, it can feel like a daunting task. If you cant quite put your finger on what that special person needs this year, these gifts will please any advertising junkie: Advertising Books If the person in your life loves advertising, they will love the whole process. And the process always starts with a creative brief. If its a good one, the work will be good. If it isnt, well, the same applies.   Sadly, there are very few books written on the subject of creative brief writing.  Actually, there are just two. They are the first and second editions of Howard Ibach’s book How To Write An Inspired Creative Brief. Both are excellent sources of information, although the second edition has more bang for your buck.   If youre looking for other books in this genre, try any of the following: Hey Whipple, Squeeze This by Luke SullivanTruth, Lies Advertising: The Art of Account Planning by Jon SteelOgilvy On Advertising by David OgilvyPurple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth GodinFrom Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbor by Jerry Della Femina Vintage Print Ads Countless old print ads pop up on sites like eBay every day. Other popular sites for print ads are AdAholic and AdClassix.com. Make your print ad gift even more perfect by choosing one directly related to your friend or loved one. A Mustang buff born in 1965 would enjoy a Mustang print ad from the year he was born. A copywriter for Van Heusens ad agency might like a classic Van Heusen print ad from the 50s. If youre buying for your significant other, get a brands print ad from the year you were born, and the year your sweetie was born. Have your vintage ads framed for a special touch. With most print ads going for a few bucks, you can turn a little extra effort on your part into a cherished gift theyll appreciate for years to come. Quirky Gadgets and Toys If youve never worked at an ad agency, youd be surprised how crazy things can get. Deadlines, long nights and creative brainstorming can really take a toll on your favorite ad exec or creative director. Whether they work in a cubicle or have a cushy office with a view, give them some quirky gadgets for their desk. These social media coasters are great fun. And these minimalist posters are quirky and cool. Or if they burn the midnight oil at home, think about gifts for outside of work hours too - for instance, a waterproof notepad for ideas in the shower.   Also, fun desk and office toys are a big hit with anyone working in the ad industry, not just creatives. This is a business that requires a lot of creativity and lateral thinking, and toys can help to loosen up the gears and get things going. ThinkGeek has a whole section of its online store devoted to these kinds of games and gadgets, and you can also find all sorts of gizmos on Amazon and eBay. Whether its a USB rocket launcher, a Lego water bottle, or a piece of thinking putty, they will love the fun it provides. A Homemade Slogan Generator This is a fun one for crafty people who are on a budget. It also helps if you like to get silly! Buy two small baskets, vases or jars. Youre looking for a small container you can drop bits of paper into that can be accessed easily. Decorate your containers any way you like.  One will serve as your brand name container. Fill it with real brand names, wacky words, city names, whatever you want. For example, lets say you write the word, Blackmail, and drop it into your brand name container. For your second container, youll write slogans and catchphrases. You can write real slogans or make up your own. For example, we would write down the Geico ad slogan So Easy a Caveman Can Do It. Then, we drop it into your second container. Keep adding words/brand names and real or fictitious slogans. Now you have a wacky advertising game for that special someone. From our example, we pull from the two containers and have: BlackmailSo Easy a Caveman Can Do It You would be surprised how much fun you can have with this one! Use your favorite search engine to find old advertising slogans if you choose to use real slogans for your game. Personalized Cartoons Most people who work in advertising have a great sense of humor. A personalized cartoon is a gift that would look great on their desk or hanging in their office. Give them a chuckle and a conversation starter at work. The cartoon doesnt have to be directly related to advertising. You can always find Web sites of cartoon artists who would probably be willing to create a custom cartoon, though. Your friend or loved one picked a good field to be interested in. The gift possibilities for the advertising junkie are endless. Be sure to  share your gift ideas  for advertising junkies with others. Alcoholic Beverages If the person youre buying a gift for is prone to the occasional pint of ale or glass of wine (and in advertising, thats almost everyone), an alcoholic gift will be much appreciated. In fact, studies have shown that the right amount of alcohol can increase creativity and creative thinking, which is essential in the advertising business. One agency, CPB, went so far as to create a pale ale called The Problem Solver, which indicated on the side how much you should drink to reach your peak creative powers.   So, get creative with the alcohol. There are literally thousands of different brands of beer, wine, and hard liquors. Some will have names that naturally apply to the person you know. Fat Tire for a cyclist. Perhaps a bottle of The Prisoner wine for someone whos stuck in a job they cant wait to leave. Whatever it is, alcoholic drinks are always a winner and are usually the number one choice for white elephant parties.

Six ASME Nominees Named for the 2017 New Faces of Engineering ... Six ASME Nominees Named for the 2017 New Faces of Engineering ... Six ASME Nominees Named for the 2017 New Faces of Engineering Program Feb. 24, 2017 > DiscoverE has named six ASME members and student members as the Society̢۪s finalists in the 2017 New Faces of Engineering program, which annually spotlights the important contributions early career engineers and engineering students are making to the profession and to society. The nominees representing ASME and the other societies taking part in this years New Faces of Engineering program were announced on Feb. 21 as part of DiscoverEs slate of Engineers Week activities. The final winners of each category will be announced in ASME News in April. Monica Black Three members of ASME - Monica Black, Cynthia Sung and Emily Worinkeng - are ASMEs nominees this year in the New Faces of Engineering-Professional category, which recognizes the accomplishments of practicing engineers up to the age of 30. ASME student members Meredith Burke, Kathryn DeAngelo and Zakai Olsen were named as the Societys nominees in the New Faces-College Edition program, which highlights the achievements of third-, fourth- and fifth-year engineering students. One of ASMEs New Faces-Professional nominees, Monica Black, is a mechanical engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport. As the Platform and Payload Integration Department's test and evaluation lead for shock testing and survivability, Blacks work includes composite materials research in support of her masters thesis on finite element analysis of submarine components and hands-on testing of new technologies. She is an active participant in community activities, such as volunteering in area science fairs and other local programs and planning lunch presentations as department representative for the areas New Professional Network. Black is currently pursuing a masters degree in mechanical engineering in applied mechanics at the University of Rhode Island. She received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2013. Cynthia Sung Cynthia Sung, Ph.D., ASMEs second New Faces-Professional finalist, is an assistant professor in the mechanical engineering and applied mechanics department at the University of Pennsylvania. Through her work, which incorporates artificial intelligence, engineering design and rapid fabrication, Dr. Sung aims to provide non-engineers with intuitive computational design and fabrication tools that will enable them to better understand and utilize robots. The tools she has developed enable people to personalize robots for their particular needs, and also allow robotic systems to be rapidly customizable for hazardous tasks including search-and-rescue operations in space. Sung received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Rice University in 2011. She received both a masters degree and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2013 and 2016, respectively. Emily Worinkeng ASMEs third New Faces-Professional nominee, Emily Worinkeng, is an assembly and automation engineer at The Boeing Company in North Charleston, S.C., where she developed a safer and more efficient process for aligning and installing the flaps of airplane wings, which earned a meritorious invention award from the company. In addition, Worinkeng supervised a team that worked on an innovative accelerated curing system for the company, and managed several rate enabler projects involving Boeing 787 tail assemblies, engines and wings. She received a bachelors degree in physics and mathematics in 2011 from Berea College, Berea, Ky., and a masters degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University in 2013. Meredith Burke Meredith Burke, one of the Societys three 2017 New Faces-College Edition finalists, is a mechanical engineering major at Southern Methodist University. Burke, who also is majoring in math and art, plans to combine those interests with mechanical engineering into her own area of professional and personal expertise. Fusing these majors will cultivate my creativity and ingenuity to solve complex technical problems from a fresh interdisciplinary perspective, Burke wrote in her New Faces application. Burke has also been involved in a number of clubs and activities at SMU, serving as an ambassador for the universitys Lyle School of Engineering, secretary for its Theta Tau Engineering Fraternity chapter, and member of SMUs marching band, among other positions. Kathryn DeAngelo Kathryn DeAngelo, also an ASME New Faces-College Edition nominee this year, is a mechanical engineering major at Pennsylvania State University. DeAngelo was inspired to become an engineer by her father, a petroleum engineer who would regularly share his work with the family. Her interest intensified in middle school and high school when she participated in various STEM activities, including the annual BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) Robotics Competition. Im anxious to get out in the real world to solve actual problems and learn how the professional world works, she wrote in her application. I cant wait to be able to call myself an engineer rather than just an engineering student. A student member of ASME since 2013, DeAngelo is also a member of the Society of Women Engineers, the Penn State University Engineering Club and the Penn State University Blue and White Society, among other groups. Zakai Olsen ASMEs third College Edition finalist, Zakai Olsen, is a mechanical engineering major at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Olsen, who was home-schooled until college, points to his four years participating in the FIRST Lego League Robotics program as a pivotal experience that enabled him to work with a team of other home-schooled students in a competition involving robotics engineering - an area that especially appealed to him given his long-held interest in math and science. These years were crucial in developing my interest in math, science, technology, and engineering, he said in his application essay. When the time came to apply for college, there was no question in my mind as to what major I would be choosing. During his years as an engineering undergrad, Olsen has been also been busy helping his fellow engineering students by providing free, private tutoring services on subjects ranging from calculus and statics to differential equations and machine design. The Characteristics of Generation C

The Characteristics of Generation C The Characteristics of Generation C Look out, Generation X, Y, and Z â€" theres a new generation emerging: Generation C. Its members have one big thing in common: theyre digital natives and exceptionally tech-savvy. But researchers are having trouble pinpointing the main characteristics of Generation C, and exactly who can be included in this category. What does the C stand for? That would be connected. Members of this generation are connected to people and things in ways we never imagined in the past. Social media, gadgets, and wireless technology allow Generation C to share data on the fly. To put this in perspective, here are some numbers about their habits from a Google/IPSOS/NowWhat ?study and other sources: 90% create content for the net at least monthly83% have posted a picture online76% visit YouTube weekly59% look to the internet as their main source of entertainment56% have followed through after watching ads on YouTube55% are connected to 100 or more people through social media Defining Generation C by Birth Year Some researchers like to define Generation C according to when its members were born. For example, CEFRIO, a public-private technology transfer group in Quebec, Canada, pegs Generation C as a group of individuals born between 1982 and 1996. It would actually place Generation C within the Generation Y or Millennial category. According to researchers William Strauss and Neil Howe, who have authored a number of books on generational trends, Millennials were born between 1982 and 2001. Defining Generation C by Technological Focus Others prefer to define Generation C as a psychographic group, or a number of individuals who share a similar state of mind, whether that be certain personality traits, values, attitudes, interests, or lifestyles. In this definition, Generation Cs members all have the common characteristic of being digital natives who turn to the Internet naturally and extensively to do a number of things, and are very Web 2.0-savvy. Dan Pankraz, a youth planning specialist for a digital marketing agency in Sydney, Australia, says there are five main characteristics of Generation C: A love of content creation and mashing - They can unleash their creative forces using the latest gadgets and gizmos. Companies spend millions of dollars marketing products that encourage this generation to show off their creative skills. The tendency to form active communities  - Gen C wants to belong to a community online communities, to be more specific. After all, most of them have never known a reality beyond the internet age. They use online mediums to stay in touch with friends, family, and business contacts and engage with people with shared interests A gravitation toward social media sites  - Here they can participate in discussions about different ideas and get involved in cultural conversations. They stay informed about causes that matter to them and take an action to improve the environment around them.A desire to be in control  - Access to information allows them to control their own lives, and they’re content with complexity because they’re well equipped to deal with it.A desire to work in more creative industries - They don’t want to be restricted by rigid social structures. You’ll see less of them working for Fortune 500 companies and more with startups. According to U.K. marketing strategist Jake Pearce, age does not matter when defining Generation C. You could be a Baby Boomer (born between 1946 and 1964) and qualify as part of Generation C because you are heavily into Facebook or YouTube. Or you could technically be part of the Millennial generation and still not be part of Generation C if you have not jumped on the content creation or social media bandwagon. As this Google report puts it, “It’s not an age group; it’s an attitude and mindset defined by key characteristics.” The Differing Definitions of Generation C In some cases, the differentiation between Generation C and Y may not matter, since so many Millennials are very tech-savvy and have been immersed in the Internet from a very early age. Many of them will therefore naturally fall into the Gen C category. While the psychographic definition of Generation C may seem too broad to some, we need to think of it as a different approach to defining a group of people â€" one that does leave room to include people of all ages who are digitally inclined. In this case, perhaps we need a better name for this group, as the word generation can cause confusion. This article has since been updated by Laurence Bradford.

3 things you must do now to land a job in 2014

3 things you must do now to land a job in 2014 3 things you must do now to land a job in 2014 Jump-start your New Year’s career resolution with these three steps. The New Year is traditionally a time to reflect on last year’s accomplishments and personal growth. But more importantly, it is a great time to make plans and goals to enhance your life in the future. If your goal includes moving up in your career, here are three of the first steps you need to take to get noticed by potential employers and help you get a fresh professional start in 2014.1. Revamp your resume. Now is a great time to review your resume and highlight key accomplishments from the previous year. Take a close look at job descriptions for your “dream job” and figure out what employers are looking for in an ideal candidate. Note the qualifications you meet and include them in your resume. Articulate everything that makes you a top candidate for your desired position. Also work on your resume format. Many times, the first thing an employer is negatively drawn to is something different or quirky in your resume layout. Make sure your resume is organized and consistent so your information shines through â€" not the formatting.2. Take advantage of social media. If you haven’t yet, now is the time to gain an online presence. As a recruiter, I am constantly checking various social media channels for my next hires. You want to paint a positive picture of who you are and who you wish employers to see you as. Take some time in the New Year to research social media channels and choose which are right for you.Build a LinkedIn profile, or revamp the one you already have. Adjusting a piece of information in your profile immediately alerts your followers to the change and brings you back into the public eye. Add to your connections list. Research your friends in the areas you wish to work in and request to follow them and their peers. The more exposure you get, the more likely an employer is to contact you or an employee to refer you.3. Join networking groups.Networking is one of the best ways to get yourself out there and meet new people. There are many different networking groups you can join that are specific to your career, or the one you wish to be in. One option to try is Meetup; a fairly new company that organizes events based on shared interests. They have groups that span nearly every industry. Through networking, you can learn the pros and cons of a job or industry. Making connections can be nerve-racking, so feel free to bring a more social friend to network with you!Follow these three guidelines to set yourself up for success in the New Year and watch your resolution become reality.
